WiFi operates in two different bands, the 2.4 Ghz and the 5 Ghz. The 2.4 Ghz band allows for extended coverage with lower throughput; whereas the 5 Ghz allows for higher throughput, but in close range. In other words, your connection is faster on the 5 Ghz band and slower on the 2.4 Ghz band, but your reach will be greater when connected to the 2.4 Ghz radio. Much of the reason for this is that WiFi is affected by a number of factors – interference, building materials, other WiFi signals, home size and architecture. This is why our industry is constantly working to improve the in-home experience.
