Network Engineer
Position Overview:
The Network Engineer is responsible for the overall design and performance of the entire BTEL network. The candidate must have extensive experience in advanced routing, switching, and network virtualization and will develop creative solutions that stand up to rigorous review from peers and technology leaders.
Keep abreast of the latest technologies. Evaluate and recommend appropriate technology tools and processes, providing architectural guidance, assessing existing capabilities, gathering requirements, synthesizing findings, creating and presenting system designs, translating designs into technical solutions, validating solutions in the lab, and being a thought leader on the team.
BTEL provides an exciting, fast-paced, and dynamic environment that requires people to identify, design, and deploy the latest network technologies creatively. We are looking for network leaders who think for themselves and must have the ability to see multiple solution paths and have the desire and drive to identify the best possible answer.
The successful candidate handles various projects with a high degree of complexity, including policy development, operational policy, procedure development and adherence, development of MOP guidelines, and the overall administration of the data, network, security, and infrastructure. The Engineer will meet business unit goals, maintain quality standards, and control expenses while following company directives and practices.
Responsibilities include planning and designing the network infrastructure and enterprise network solutions; troubleshooting, installing, implementing, and administering network systems and providing Tier III support. Analyze capacity issues and develop capacity planning models. Plan and design the Unified Communications infrastructure and enterprise voice solutions to include troubleshooting, implementing, administering of voice systems, and providing Tier III support. Assesses voice systems performance to ensure that it meets the business’s present and future needs and provides voice systems planning management recommendations.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Researches, designs, and advocates new voice/data technologies, architectures, and products that will support business requirements for the enterprise and our customers.
- Create technology roadmaps, both long and short-term.
- Develop a standards-based design methodology across the infrastructure delivering solid, robust, and resilient documented designs following best practices, addressing disaster recovery, full-test compliance cycles, and ensuring all as-built deployments meet design specifications.
- Develop a business strategy for supporting the existing DSL, HFC, and FTTP infrastructure.
- Document existing systems architecture and technology portfolio to ensure accuracy is maintained.
- Identifies, tests, diagnoses, and resolves communications systems performance problems in a multi-technology environment.
- Interacts with vendors to resolve communications equipment and network system issues.
- Designs technical solutions and coordinates system build activities for voice/data connectivity and configures related network routers, switches, voice gateways, servers, and other equipment.
- Analyzes network activity and network problems to discover and prevent systematic errors and maximize the network’s efficiency.
- Recommends network design changes/enhancements for improved systems availability and performance.
- Works closely with management in developing procurement requirements and service contracts by providing technical support during contract bidding, negotiation, and award processes.
- Provide general systems administration training to the Network Operations team.
- Serves as subject matter expert in firewalls, routing/switching, traffic load balancing, remote access solutions, and broadband technologies.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
The candidate should have excellent problem-solving skills and thorough knowledge of network administration, security, data protection, and overall network architecture.
- Experience with networking technologies. Route/Switch, firewalls, ISE, wireless, load balancing, monitoring, EIGRP, OSPF, BGP, VXLAN, EBGP VPN.
- Desire and ability to quickly learn new technologies, think independently, see multiple possibilities, and get to the best answer.
- Demonstrate the ability to work productively with little direct supervision.
- Ability to effectively prioritize multiple tasks.
- Strong understanding of TCP/IP, subnets, routing, access control lists, security, firewalls, and network traffic analysis.
- Familiar with network tools such as Solarwinds, Infoblox, Netflow tools, and Wireshark.
- Experience in authentication services: Radius, TACACS/TACACS+.
- Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to provide the “Fischer Price” explanation of technology for non-technical managers, directors, and above.
- Must be self-motivated with a strong sense of ownership.
- Strong documentation skills for network diagrams, test plans and other related records.
- Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of coding languages for scripting, like Python or VBS Scripts.
- Organizational and mentoring skills
Education and Experience:
- Technical degree preferred, high school diploma required.
- Minimum 7 years of network engineering experience.
